Book Review: ScriptureDoodle by April Knight

If you follow my Instagram account you’ve probably seen me dabbling with handlettering from time to time. I am not by any means great at it, but I do love it. I also follow some Bible journaling accounts because I think it’s really cool to see the way people are artistically hammering a lesson in for themselves.

As a word girl, this stuff really resonates with me. I like seeing these words represented in such a fun, artistic way.

Because of that, and my love for starting my morning with a devotional, I jumped at the chance to review ScriptureDoodle and ScriptureDoodle: God’s Promises by April Knight.

Because these are six-week devotionals, I only flipped through God’s Promises and focused on ScriptureDoodle. They both share the same premise though, so I feel confident reviewing them as one-in-the-same.

Though I am not by any means an artist, I am definitely very artistic. I love writing in an artistic way, love listening to music, love watching dance performances and plays. I was given an adult coloring book as a gift last year and I really like that, too. ScriptureDoodle is, to me, a little bit like an adult coloring book mixed with a devotional.

Each page has a short blurb with some scripture, and then on the page beside it has a coloring page for you to fill in, write your scripture on, and play with in whatever way suits you. Because I am not super artistic, I really appreciated that the doodling pages usually had some kind of starter on them. Those helped get my brain the right start, and maybe it’s just me but I think I’m getting a little better already!

The honest truth is that I didn’t do a devotional from this book every morning. While I did very much enjoy it on the days I did, my reality is that these take a little more time than I have some days. With three little ones running around, mornings (when I normally do my daily devotional) are hectic! Throw in chores, playing with my monkeys, general child-caring tasks, meals, and of course Christmas advent activities, and some nights I crawled into bed to read a very short mom devotional instead. Still, I’m really enjoying this one and I plan to finish it (and its companion) in 2017!

If you’re at all a fan of doodling, or even if you’re just looking for a new way to switch up your current devotional routine, definitely consider ScriptureDoodle!

*I received free copies of these books from LitFuse in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are my own.

Thanks so much for your comments! I always read them, don't always have time to answer quickly. Sorry about that!
