Book Review: Good Night Tales

We are all about bedtime stories around here. We like sweet poetic books, exciting adventure books, funny books, new-to-us books, old favorites…

I was very curious about a new bedtime treasury by CS Fritz, Good Night Tales, and couldn’t wait for our copy to show up in the mail.

I was right to be excited.

I’m definitely a fan of allegory in children’s Christian fiction and this book did not disappoint in that area. The allegories were rich, as were the illustrations. Each of the stories is based on themes and ideas from Bible passages, which are clearly listed at the top of the story, so it was really easy to find time for the Bible passage earlier in the day and then the Good Night Tale at bedtime.

I think this book would be best-suited for older preschoolers and younger elementary children, but the discussion questions after each story would make it very interesting to read it with older elementary siblings mixed in too. My 2.5 year-old did ask for the book several times but a lot of it went over her head in ways that my 4.5-year-old still grasped. It was really fun to hear his answers to the discussion questions since about half of them were spot-on and the other half showed his young age. I made sure not to answer for him because I look forward to hearing how the answers change as my children grow and mature.

There were a few wordless stories in this book—I think three—and even though I am personally not afraid of wordless stories, neither of my kids liked those very much… but they loved all of the written stories and loved looking at the pictures after each story.

If you’re on the fence about Good Night Tales, I definitely say go for it! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

*I received a free copy of this book through Tyndale House in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks so much for your comments! I always read them, don't always have time to answer quickly. Sorry about that!
