March

Well. Wow. March was quite a month, no?

Coronavirus- My husband is an essential employee so he's still working despite my state having a shelter-in-place order. Not much is really all that different for the kids and me since we already homeschooled and sent most of our time at home, but we do miss the library and its programs, which we tried to do once a week, and we do miss being able to meet up with a friend.
Basically the library holds are my personal biggest life change. I did sign us up for Netflix's disc program again the other day because I wanted to get a specific DVD for homeschool that I can't get at the library anymore. Well, they didn't actually have it. But I'm still excited for 30 free days of Netflix DVDs and I would imagine we'll keep it until the library's courier service is back in action!

Watching- We're still working our way through this Marvel superhero movie lineup and we watched Captain Marvel (so-so) and Iron man (love), 24 (not appropriate but good character development), and then the whole family watched The Perfect Game since A got super into baseball for a couple weeks (lots of racist comments we had to chat about, but very good)

Writing- I did write a lot less in March though... I think I basically devoted 90% of my writing time to catching up on Covid-19 news/podcasts. Definitely not keeping that up in April!

Garden- We started a few seedlings in March and are happy to report some broccoli and zucchini sprouts already popping up through the soil. We also built a super simple, completely free wood pallet compost bin from Modern Homestead and we had planned all month to build an enclosed raised bed garden system but we're now talking about building a greenhouse... Stay tuned. We also started a Facebook ( https://m.facebook.com/thecedarridgehomestead/ ) and Instagram page (
/) for all things homestead- The Cedar Ridge Homestead!

Homeschool- We finished our electricity science unit and continued to study the revolutionary war using The Good and the Beautiful's history year 1 curriculum. Science favorites: The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip // The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind // Bill Nye the Science Guy: Electricity // energy Stick out of My First Super Science Kit // Circuit Blocks that happened to show up at the library right before it closed.

Reading- It seems quite silly now but we finally got our new bookshelves at the beginning of the month and it's so nice to see the books lined up all pretty.

The Christian Entrepreneur*- I'm going to be honest here- I barely remember this book. I read it during the beginning of the covid-19 craziness and my brain retained very little of it. I wound up just skimming the whole last 3/4 because it didn't feel like a good use of my time in that moment. However, I did like all that I did take in and I look forward to reassessing it once the dust settles because it gave me lots of ideas for incorporating our faith into our business plans.

The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew- This was such a great read-aloud! All five of us loved this one and A says he can't wait to reread it on his own when he's older.

Let Them Eat Dirt- This was a microbiome book I had requested "before" but it of course wound up being quite timely. I loved it and, as with all microbiology books, highly recommend.

The Love Letter- I am not really a romance reader but I wanted to read a revolutionary war-period book while A and I studied the revolutionary war and this fit the ball. I liked it in general, and definitely like Rachel Hauck's historical Christian fiction.

The Monogram Murders- Detective Poirot... I liked it! I'm not sure if I'll actually read the second, but generally an interesting and engaging murder mystery without the gore.

More Than We Remember*- I really liked this one! The story is about three women and the way their lives are intertwining through a drunk driving accident. The characters felt very real and the engaging story felt a lot like a Kristin Hannah book.

Plus 13 easy readers to add to A's book list 👍🏻

Also, we were sitting on the ground playing Uno one day when suddenly the whole house started shaking a little. I asked if anyone else felt it and the girls said they did, then our Uno discard pile fell over! It turned out there was an earthquake about 8 hours away from our house and I'm just super sensitive since almost none of

*I received a free copy of The Christian Entrepreneur and More Than We Remember in exchange for an honest review.
