Lately I've been enjoying stories about the season I'm sliding into, parenting teenagers. Teenagers are often portrayed in a fairly negative light but my young teen is delightful to do life with and I hope to find many more stories with a joyful parent-child teen relationship.
All She Ever Wanted (historical fiction, timeslip)... This book really touched my heart but will probably be too depressing for a lot of readers. This is about four generations of women in a family line and the pain and family dynamics that led to their paths. Our most midern-day character is raising a troubled teen, which is really what kicks off her examination of her own life and her family history.
Baxter Family books... These were very dramatic and had me very invested. The first of these books involve only the youngest Baxter child as an older teen. There's a few books only about young adults and then there are quite a few books about a family friend (Bailey Flanigan) as a teen before we start to see all the Baxter grandchildren as teenagers.
Christiansen Family books... I am still working my way through these ones and loving them. The youngest Christiansen, Amelia, is a teen at the start of the series. We don't see much of her in those books and really only see a lot of teen parenting in the Christmas novella Evergreen but I couldn't not include this series here.
Dark Justice (suspense)... in this high-speed suspense we have a woman on the Run from someone very sinister, while also trying to protect her 19-year-old daughter and her elderly mother with dementia. I read this book very quickly, sneaking in a chapter every chance I could get.
The Deep End of Love... This one is focused on a few different women but one is the mother of a pregnant teenager. This books was full of tough topics- infertility, grief, post-abortion hurt, and more- but so good. It made me tear up or cry multiple times.
Firstborn... In this one we have a woman who is raising a teenage son and then gets a shocking revelation- the young lady (whom I believe was also an older teen) she gave up for adoption as a teen would like to meet her biological mother. This is news to her husband and son so we see a lot of family dynamics worked through in this one.
Intervention (suspense)... This page-turner series was hard to put down but its focus on a teenage daughter with a drug addiction was also hard to read at times. The mother character also has a teenage son whom we see more of in the later books.
Ladies of the Lake (historical fiction, time slip)... This was such a delightful read for me! We essentially open with a teenage daughter begging her mother to come to her boarding school graduation, and mother refusing. Then, we examine her story and find out the why. I definitely see myself re-reading this one someday.
More Than We Remember... This is a story about three different women whose lives are tied together by one terrible accident. That is the primary focus here but one of them is also patenting a troubled teen while dealing with this other struggle, too. I got quite a lot out of this one.
One Perfect Day... I have to caution that few of you will be able to stomach this one. We're following two mothers- one whose teenage son just died, one whose teenage daughter was just saved by an organ transplant from that boy. I almost put this one down several times but was ultimately glad I'd finished it.
The Printed Letter Bookshop... This one, too, is from the perspective of multiple women, one of whom is the mother of a troubled teen. This one is focused on the employees of The Printed Letter Bookshop and I enjoyed it but still haven't read its sequel.
Though I Stumble... This one is about four different women at a Christian women's conference, all working through their own life circumstances and being moved by the speaking they hear at the conference. One of the women, Treva, is the mother of the 19-year-old character, Stephanie. They both have to work through Stephanie's story and this made for such a powerful read! I really loved this book but couldn't get my hands on the rest of the series at the time. Now I'm reminded that I really wanted to read the rest of it but it's been so long I'll probably need to start with this one again!
Twenty Something-Else... This story was about a woman who had a pretty negative view of her life and her children, then got a chance to re-do her twenties after a pickleball-related head injury. The mc made a lot of choices I disagreed with and I admittedly asked myself several times if I really wanted to this all play out. I again don't necessarily recommend this for everyone but I do think some of you will enjoy it.

Christian Fiction for Music Lovers
🎶 Because You're Mine (suspense)... This is a creepy standalone about an Irish singer whose husband was just killed. It's quite clear that she's in danger and it's a great mystery to unravel. It's also set in the Carolinas which always feels so summer-y to me!
🎶 Bespoke (Christmas, historical)... This one is very short, readable in one cozy afternoon, and follows the daughter of a famous secret symphony composer. Fans of classical music will appreciate this one.
🎶 Beyond Ivy Walls (historical)... Piano fans, this Beauty and the Beast retelling set in 1903 Iowa is for you!
🎶 A Carol for Christmas (Christmas)... This one is heavily focused on a young marriage and its struggles but the young wife is a guitar player and we see that quite a lot, too.
🎶 Long Way Gone (general fiction)... This Prodigal Son retelling is going to be a bit too gritty for dome of you but it follows a young musician who leaves home to make it big. This one is filled with talk of guitar and singing.
🎶 Love and a Little White Lie (romance)... Although I'm not a romance fan I really enjoyed this one. Our female protagonist is agnostic but accepts a clerical position at her aunt's church in an attempt to start over. Then she meets the church guitarist and her aunt's landscaper. Watching her decide who she belonged with was more fun than I expected.
🎶 The Roads We Follow (romance)... Again, not typically a romance fan... but very typically a Nicole Deese fan! I loved this story of a young woman her sisters road tripping with their famous singer mother while everyone has so much going on in the background!
🎶 Roots of Wood and Stone (historical, time slip)... This one is for jazz fans which I do believe is a rarity. Our heroine is uncovering her family history and we're slipping into that past but she happens to make jazz music on the side just for fun.
🎶 The Shunning (Amish)... This Amish fiction, the first in a trilogy, is not about music (it's about a young Amish woman finding out she's adopted snd searching for her birth mother) but talks a fair bit about guitar-playing.
🎶 Wedding Dress Christmas (Christmas)... A magical wedding dress, the owner of the wedding dress shop, and a hunky country music star all come together in this Christmas story I really enjoyed. This story would work fine as a standalone but will mean more if you've read The Wedding Dress (which I also love).
Also, Jesus loves you ❤️

Christian Fiction Retellings, Revisitings, and Nods
Beyond Ivy Walls (historical fiction)... This Beauty and the Beast retelling is set in 1903 Iowa. I generally like this author and I liked this book pretty well though its not what I generally gravitate towards.
Dear Mr Knightley (Contemporary, epistolary)... This was such a cute book and it's a retelling of a classic I still have yet to read (but do intend to!), Daddy Long Legs.
Dust (YA, Contemporary, fantasy)... I wasn't sure I should include this as a YA but some of you won't mind. This is a Peter Pan/Nederland revisiting. It's an adventure but as far as I recall it was very light if not fully lacking on the Christian content.
Eli (Contemporary)... The premise of the one really fascinated me- what if Jesus hadn't come back until modern times? It's borderline historical now, since it was published in 2000.
In Search of a Prince (Contemporary)... This one is for fans of The Princess Diaries- remember that one? We have a young woman casually living her typical American life and then, bam, she's hit with the news that she's actually an African princess and needs to go take over the throne, like, now. Oh, and she needs to marry. 😉
Ladies of the Lake (historical fiction, time slip)... I really loved this book and it was such a delightful nod to Anne of Green Gables. Our main character lives a similar orphan life and identifies a lot with Anne... but she also strikes up a pen pal friendship / mentorship either the Anne author LM Montgomery!
* If you're an Anne fan, I also recommend the clean secular fiction Marilla of Green Gables.
Laura's Shadow (historical fiction, time slip)... This time slip is partially about Cap Garland and another girl in his time period, partially about a writer of a Laura Ingalls Wilder comic strip and her family history/secrets, some regarding Laura herself. Little House fans will likely enjoy this one.
Long Way Gone... (Contemporary) This one was a gritty, modern day retelling of The Prodigal Son. I'm a bit sensitive and struggled through a few parts of this one but boy, does this author know what he's doing!
Once Upon a Dickens Christmas (historical)... I'm sure you can guess from the title but this collection has three Christmas novellas all about Charles Dickens and his works. My mom and I read all three as Christmas buddy reads and we both enjoyed all of them.
Once Upon a Wardrobe (historical)... This one is for my Narnia fans! A college student befriends professor CS Lewis and learns more about the Narnia world he's created.
Tacos for Two (Contemporary)... This one is a more modern nod to You've Got Mail and I really enjoyed it! We are working with taco trucks instead of bookstores and an anonymous dating app instead of AOL emails. Fun, for sure.
To Love a Beast (historical)... Another Beauty and the Beast retelling- this one was set in late-1800s Texas. I enjoyed this one in preparation for a Texas trip last September and thought it was cute. The author has a whole slew of Texas-set fairy-tale retellings if that sounds fun to you.
To Love a Lady (historical)... I really loved My Fair Lady in middle school and high school so I enjoyed this My Fair Lady retelling. My mom and I buddy read this one, too, and she was also happy with it.
Under the Texas Mistletoe (historical)... Okay, this was a Mom buddy read, too. We liked all of the Christmas stories in this collection but it's on the list specifically for A Texas Christmas Carol, which is of course a Texas-set retelling of A Christmas Carol.
I'll also tell you about YA author Melanie Dickerson who has many fairytale retellings. I tried two and didn't love them but they were both buddy reads with my cousin who devoured them and then read all the others in the series and I only ever hear great things so they're still worth a try if you love fairytale retellings.
Happy reading! And friendly reminder that Jesus knows every tiny thing you've ever been ashamed of but thinks you're precious anyway and can't wait to hug you and say "Well done." 💙

Christian fiction set in a college/university
I thought some of you might be in the mood for some collegiate reads as we move into the back-to-school season. We've got students and professors here so hopefully you'll find something just right for you!
The Baxters series... Many of these family drama books take place in a college setting as Luke Baxter starts out as a student and we later follow family friends Bailey Flanigan and Andi Ellis into their dorm and classes.
The Bridge... This Christmas romance takes place primarily in a bookstore but there is plenty of college talk since that's where our protagonists meet. This one has also been made into a Christmas movie I hope to watch this year.
Dear Mr Knightley... This epistolary novel is a modern-day retelling of My Daddy Longlegs. A journalism major gets a scholarship which requires frequent letters to her anonymous benefactor to update her progress... so much fun!
I'll Be Seeing You... This family drama timeslip is kicked off by a college student interviewing her grandmother as a class project.
Lost Loves series... This is a romance duology centered around a college student finding her biological parents. We explore her parents ' teenage relationship in the first and her own young relationship in the second. These stories include some intense military scenes (plus very conservative military views) that may not work for everyone. I'm a sensitive reader and I made it through but I did feel very upset at times.
The Lost Manuscript... This second chance romance is such a cozy read! I'd like to sum it up in sentence fragments- Missing historian grandma. Professor spouses divorcing but still in love. English castle. Tea. Riddles and clues. *I do want you to know that our female protagonist suffered an off-page miscarriage before the story began and it comes up many times.
Once Upon a Wardrobe... This historical fiction focuses on the student of Professor CS Lewis and her dying little brother's obsession with Narnia. This one was also very cozy in feel.
Someday Home... Ah, something different- in this one our college student is in her 50s and starting a new chapter in her life.
When Twilight Breaks... This WWII story follows Peter, a linguistics grad student in Germany, and a female American correspondent.

Six great books that talk about cancer
The Baxter Family books by Karen Kingsbury (Contemporary Christian fiction) ... I always try to warn that this series isn't for everyone even though its an absolute favorite of mine so far. It can be very intense and emotional at times, heartwarming and joyful at other times.
Beyond by Amber Van Linge (contemporary Christian fiction) ... This is a miracle story about a young teenage girl with a brain tumor and I loved getting to know her. The paragraphs are not set up in a traditional format but I didn't feel that it detracted from the story.
The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip (Christian timeslip)* ... I just had the pleasure of reading this new release and I can't recommend it enough! Mrs. Kid's faith is such a beautiful thing to behold and the relationship she and Aidyn develop is so heartwarming. The bulk of the contemporary storyline takes place in Mrs. Kip's hospice home and the flashbacks show us the story of her life, mostly during the 1970s.
The Hardest Peace (Christian nonfiction) ... This memoir was written by a wife and mother with terminal cancer. It was just as moving as it was painful. This is a HARD book to read but it was also a richly rewarding treasure trove for me.
Strands of Truth (Christian suspense) ... This suspense/thriller was not focused on cancer- The main character finds her biological family through a DNA testing site and then finds many of the people in her life turning up dead, going missing, or dealing with mysterious circumstances that need to be uncovered- but you do see a supporting character going through cancer treatment.
Undone by Michele Cushatt (Christian nonfiction) ... The author of this memoir shares a lot of her life but a big part is her tongue cancer story. I got so much out of this book!

7 Christian fiction novels with strong grief elements
The Baxter Family books (contemporary)... This is a series about a family and it's filled with all the real elements of life. Love, birth, death, joy, sorrow, pain, triumph. It's my favorite series right now and I always warn that it's full of edgy stuff (substance abuse, adultery, and more) but always with a faith element tied in.
The Dead Don't Dance (contemporary)... This is a beautiful but emotional novel about a man whose wife slips into a coma after a tragic loss during childbirth. It's full of grief and reminiscence, but also beauty and grace. It'll be depressing if you don't naturally see more than one side of things but it'll deeply move you if you do.
Life After (contemporary) ... Our main heroine is wracked with survivor's guilt after she's the only person who walks away from a train bombing. She's dealing with a kind of impersonal grief for those she never knew, and she's also working on a memorial project with a grieving family who lost their wife/mother in the bombing.
The Lines Between Us (historical fiction)... This WWII story is about the mysterious death of a smoke jumper in Oregon and the secret investigation of it all by his sister and best friend. The grief in this one is not as raw as some of the others on this list but there are glimpses of it through the mystery.
Rock Harbor series (suspense)... This series is about a search & rescue woman and her dog. The first book is full of her grief as she grapples with the loss of her husband and son after their plane goes missing.
Stories That Bind Us (historical fiction)... This book surprised me in some ways. This is the story of a very recently widowed woman whose estranged sister shows up with a five-year-old son. The two form a beautiful bond through story and the focus of the story is on that relationship far more than her grief. This book almost doesn't belong on this list as a result but there is still an underlying grief so I added it.
Whose Waves These Are (historical fiction, timeslip)... This timeslip takes place partially at the end of WWII, when a young man starts a project to deal with his grief over the recent loss of his soldier brother. This is a favorite of mine and I was not even a little surprised when it won a Christy award.

Christian fiction featuring 20-something main characters
Black... This sci-fi read is a great recommendation for men but female fans of sci-fi or dystopian fiction will enjoy it too.
The Edge of Belonging... Homelessness, adoption, and family secrets! This one has a sweet, gentle feel to it.
In Search of a Prince... A 25-year-old New Yorker learns that not only is she actually the princess of an African island, she's also required to find a husband, stat!
Love and a Little White Lie... This is the story of a young woman who starts working at her aunt's church and falls for a worship leader... But there's one little problem: he doesn't know that she's an atheist.
Moonlight School... This atmospheric historical fiction takes us to Appalachia where a program has just started for illiterate adults interested in learning to read & write.
A Promise Engraved*... This Alamo timeslip has a great family history storyline centering around a mysterious ring. Fans of historical fiction and family ties will enjoy this gem by Liz Tolsma.
Redemption... The first book in Karen Kingsbury's Baxter Family series is focused on an affair so took me a while to actually read. It's definitely not my favorite in the series but it was still engaging and worth it to get to the rest of them!
Sunrise... An Alaskan pilot, the girl he left behind, and some pretty decent family drama + suspense! This was a fun one!
Until Leaves Fall in Paris... This WWII fiction is about a ballerina running a bookstore in Paris, a collaborator automaker, and the lines between them.
When Twilight Breaks... Another WWII novel (I love them!), an American journalist, a professor, and things heating up in Nazi Germany.
* I received a free copy of A Promise Engaged in exchange for an honest review.

Christian fiction filled with cute children
I love children and I love seeing them make an appearance in the books I read. Sometimes their appearances help me see the world through their eyes and show my own children compassion for their child-sized struggles while other times they just delight me. If you like to see children in your fiction too, here's a list of kid-filled Christian fiction picks I've read.
At Home in Mitford... Father Tim spends a lot of time fostering a boy in this book. I didn't really love this story the way so many others do but I did think this relationship was cute.
Beneath the Seams... Our main protagonist here has a mommy-and-me fashion line so we see a lot of sweet moments between her and her daughter. We've got travel, fashion, ethics, and a life-changing new understanding of a pretty underrated issue. Love this one!
The Haunting of Bonaventure Circus... This one is for my suspense fans. This gothic timeslip shows us the 1920s circus life of Pippa and the modern-day single mom attempting to balance motherhood with a job renovating the old circus depot... And a whole lot of mystery and intrigue in between.
Karen Kingsbury's Baxter Family series... I love this series! I've linked book 1, which I don't think talks as much about the children, but we soon see a whole lot of the kids in the Baxter Family. My current favorite series.
Life After... A young girl's mother was killed in a train bombing and now she is teaming up with the only survivor for a big project. The PTSD in this one felt very accurate.
Over the Edge... Our heroine has been infected with Lyme disease as payback to her husband since he doesn't believe in its ability to cause chronic illness. He doesn't believe her, either and she's trying to balance motherhood with this mystery even while her body is betraying her. So good!
Remember Me... I was so excited to learn about the Spanish civil war but my goodness! War atrocities, sexual child abuse, and suicide are all depicted in this novel. I felt no hope walking away from it! Still, the siblings' strong relationship was a beautiful thing to see.
Rock Harbor series... This series is about a search-and-rescue worker and her dog but a child is also very heavily featured throughout each book. I think this is the first adult series I truly enjoyed and saw all the way through.
Stories That Bind Us... This 1960s story is about a newly widowed 40-year-old and the relationship she begins to strike up with the young nephew she never even knew existed. This one is very sweet.
Until Leaves Fall in Paris*... This WWII story has so many things I love in a book! We have a ballerina, a bookstore, secret resistance missions, and a big meaty moment of intensity! Plus the cutest little girl, Josie, who is a creative little storyteller herself. This was a good one!
*I received a free copy of Until Leaves Fall in Paris from Netgalley. Opinions are my own.

Christian Fiction for Animal Lovers
🐘 The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus*... This suspenseful timeslip isn't as animal-heavy as some others on this list but there were still plenty of circus animal mentions! (And you all know how much I love circus animals!)
🐕 Rock Harbor series by Colleen Coble... This suspense series' heroine is a search and rescue ___ along with her German shepherd. Suspense isn't my main genre these days but it was for a while and I loved this series!
🐕 That Dog Won't Hunt by Brandilyn Collins... This southern contemporary novel, about a family meeting the youngest son's fiance for the first time, heavily features a very expressive Yorkie named Lady Penelope. I really liked it, but trigger warning- this book does contain memories of an abusive childhood.

Homeschool History: Revolutionary War
We've been working through American history and I've decided to list our favorite resources for a specific time period ever so often. We'll start today with the Revolutionary War and the resources I've used for ages 5-7.
Adventures in American History... My mom got us this Adventures in Oddysey audio drama and it's a huge hit. They just want to plow through it and I'm constantly having to convince them to wait for the next episode until we've read books and explored other resources for the subject they just learned about!
Bedtime History Podcast: Paul Revere's Ride // George Washington part 1, 2 & 3
The Good and the Beautiful's History Year 1... These lessons were a bit lengthy if you're only working with the early elementary crowd but my son still loved it. The lesson book, the Big Book of History stories, the Keys of History board game, all of it.
Picture Books: American Girl: The Story of America (this is such a fun timeline book! Each time period is much too brief to be used alone but it's a great sidekick!) // George vs George // George Washington's Teeth
Early readers: George Washington: the First President by Sarah Albee // Imagination Station books 13-15 // Ranger in Time: Night of Soldiers and Spies
Middle Grade: Toliver's Secret by Esther Wood Brady (we read this a read-aloud, as recommended by TGTB's history unit. I liked it. A was on the fence at first but loved it by the end).
Videos: America: the Story of Us (definitely best for ages 10 or 12 and up) // Animated Hero Classics: George Washington
I've shared before that my childhood history lessons were dry and lackluster. I retained very little of it so I've been enjoying learning alongside my children. Those elements of history that did stick for me all involved historical fiction making it all come alive so I'm reading a historical fiction grown-up book with some units, too. For this one I read Rachel Hauck's Christian fiction timeslip The Love Letter. Romantic stories are never my favorites but I did like this one (she's a great writer) and it did indeed help this time period come alive for me! I don't necessarily recommend it for high schoolers but you know your kid better than I do!
